Deborah Freemel joined Saddleback College in August, 2003 as an adjunct faculty member. Deborah has also taught at Mira Costa College. Her current teaching assignments include: Soc 180 Introduction to Gerontology, Soc 126 Sociology of Death and Dying; and Soc 25 Social Stratification. Previous courses include: Soc 1 Introduction to Sociology; Soc 10 Sociology of Marriage and Family; and Soc 15 Socialization of the Child.
Prior to teaching Deborah worked extensively in the community for many years as a social gerontologist. Her career path working in the field of Gerontology began right out of high school. Deborah has worked both hands on and in administrative positions in nonprofit and government agencies (older adult recreation; emeritus adult education; adult day care; senior center; nutrition center; senior transportation; crisis intervention; information and referral; Medicare education and advocacy; community human services task force and advisory boards).
In her spare time, Deborah volunteers for the American Red Cross in disaster services and is a First Aid/CPR and Disaster Services instructor. Deborah is also a volunteer Girl Scout adult education trainer. Her favorite pastime is curling up on the couch with a good book and her ever present golden retriever 'shadow'. She also enjoys visiting both her daughter in San Francisco and daughter, son-in-law, and 3 year old grandson in San Diego. When Deborah teaches exclusively online, she spends time in Washington where her husband of 38 years is currently working.
