I began teaching Microbiology at Saddleback College in 2003. My undergraduate education is in Microbiology with a minor in Genetics. I earned my B.S. from North Carolina State University. I did my graduate work in the field of immunology at the University of California, Irvine in the department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. During that time I studied signals that control inflammation during chronic infection with the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. After finishing my Ph.D. I spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher studying inflammation in the central nervous system of mice as it relates to disease and recovery from injury. I studied viral infection in mice as a model for Multiple Sclerosis; and also assessed the effects of stem cell transplantation on the immune system in mice.
Currently I teach Bio 15 Microbiology, Bio 3C Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, and Bio 41 Human Genetics.
